O. Henry was the pen name of William Sidney Porter, who was born on September 11, 1862 in Greensboro, North Carolina. Porter was a licensed pharmacist and worked on a sheep ranch in Texas. He was a draftsman for the General Land Office and a teller for the First National Bank of Texas. He was convicted of embezzlement and eventually served five years in prison. While in prison, he began writing short stories under his pseudonym and eventually wrote over 300. As O. Henry, Porter is one of America's best known writers, and his stories, such as "The Gift of the Magi" and "The Ransom of Red Chief", are still taught in schools. In 1918, the O. Henry Awards, an annual anthology of short stories, was established in his honor. Porter died on June 5, 1910.

A little gem in its own right, though requiring some time to digest. O. Henry never fails to delight with a clever twist or a witty, yet pithy ending. If you too have gotten bored of reading the same, simple prose of modern writers or simply love New York, invest some time in this classic collection.
I have always like O.Henry short stories since high school. Sometimes the ending is a little quirky but if you like his style and want to know what early 20th century in America was like... clothes, culture, social status, etc... you will enjoy these. AND, you can read one story in one sitting. Recently I have watched on PBS MR. SELFRIDGE and the talk of "shop girls" in O.Henry stories fits right into this genre.
While O. Henry's stories were most certainly not written recently, they are consistently well written; sometimes comical, sumetimes sad, and many times absolutely wonderful. Henry uses powerful language, themes speaking of the social classes in New York during this era, and often vivid imagery. While his introductions may seem quite repetitive, each story is unique and causes one to contemplate sometimes weighty issues. The setting of the early 1900's New York provides an interesting backdrop for the stories. Overall, O. Henry's work is fascinating and provides quick relief from stresses in everyday life, and it certainly helps that this book is free for .
All of O. Henry's short stories are pleasant, excellent. If you don't know of him, you'll be glad you found this author. Something different for today.
O'Henry is the unrivaled master of this genre. His quaint stories of the Big City at the turn of the last century are about perfect. They feature comedy and pathos and surprise endings. Great fun for a quick read.
My first book by this author. A Gem!
Any of these short stories could be expanded into full novels. That they haven't been has probably much to do with their success.
The varity of subject matter boggles my mind ...especially when compared to (most) 'modern' day stories/authors who seem stuck with such limited themes.
(At times a few to many unknown adjectives for me - but, that's probably my insufficiency.)
O. Henry was an American writer who was know for his wit and intersting plot twists. He was a very prolific writer of short stories, many of which ended up on the silver screen ( The Gift of the Maji, The Ransom of Red Chief, The Last Leaf, etc.). The stories in this book are not as well-known as some of his others, but reading a short story by O. Henry always counts as time well-spent. He reminds us that there is a difference between writing and literature. After you finish this book, look up some of his other works and read them.
