This is the third book in the Pretty series which can be read as a stand-alone. This review is for both parts which were read back to back. For publisher reasons the book had to be split and part two was available for free to readers from the author or at a reduced price at retail sites.Tommi Lawrence wasn’t dealt an easy life. As a teenager she had to grow up fast when events warranted that she take over the care of her family, a younger brother who suffers from Asperger’s syndrome and an invalid mother who she hides from the world. She’s the girlfriend of a drug dealer but not by choice. She’s done the best that she can to survive and has been planning an escape from the situation that they’re stuck in. She doesn’t need complications but finds one gorgeous one when she’s stranded by a flat tire and spare and she’s late to meet her boyfriend, something that he can’t abide.
Sig Locke is a cop from a family of cops. Seeing a stranded female on the road he stops and is struck by her beauty and green eyes that hide much. He gives her a ride and is totally surprised when he goes to return the cellphone that she left in his truck. The man she’s with is a known drug dealer that the police have been trying to take down with no success. That Tommi is with such a man troubles him but it also gives him an idea and he soon goes undercover working for the boyfriend as Tommi’s protector.
Being guarded is a problem for Tommi, she can’t afford to have her whereabouts looked at too closely and to be guarded by Sig, a man who makes her crave him is a danger to her focus. He’s not like most men associated with her boyfriend. She’s learned not to trust but Sig proves that to some degree she can trust him though she doesn’t share her secrets until she has no choice. Can she survive learning Sig’s truth, his true identity and the consequences it would mean? For all the toughness that Tommi exhibits she is quite vulnerable to a good caring man like Sig and when things spin out of control he is the only one that she can turn to and hope that her trust is not misplaced.
Not all things in life are black and white, which is what Sig being a cop is used to. There are shades of gray to Tommi’s story, circumstances beyond a person’s control that dictated the life that she’s known. Their attraction is undeniable and it’s fruition inevitable but can Sig save her? Doing his job could possibly lead to her death or the downfall of her and those she loves. He’s made the biggest mistake of his career but perhaps not of his life, he got involved and will do anything it takes to keep Tommi safe.
This book is darker than the first two books in the series, the storyline being involved with criminal elements. Normally I don’t like a plot where there is possible cheating but nothing is as it seems about Tommi’s relationship with her drug dealer boyfriend; it’s quite a shocking arrangement. Lies and secrets are how the hero and heroine began their relationship but it’s their chemistry and the true deep connection that they find with each other that ultimately saves them both. There were quite a few twists and turns that I did not see coming, lots of suspense. The emotional depth of these characters had me invested in their outcome and unfolding events had me holding my breath often. There are parts near the end that will break your heart and then an epilogue that leaves you smiling.

So hard to rate a book that is not done! So I am gonna just say that this rating is for the "start up"...but I can tell already as a whole it is gonna way exceed that!
I love M Leighton...honest to goodness...love her. I do not think I have read one book by her that I didn't enjoy. That being said, I admit that I was nervous, crazy nervous about Sig Locke getting a book. I felt the pressure for her...I knew this was limited do to publishing contraints...I knew it was part of a whole. Guess what? IT DID NOT MATTER!
In just this first part, I got a fast paced WTF is going on read and I got hooked! I fell for the cocky, confident, and fun-hearted Sig! This man in blue is a good guy with a dirty mind and strong come on! I mean...Hello Sexy Sig...
Good thing I also fell for "just Tommi" too! She is a Cool girl with a sexy next door feel and great smile who transforms into a kept woman depending on the time of day. Too bad her mysterious mission keeps her in the company of a drug king...living a life very different from what she wants. But WHY?
Both are hiding truths. Both are looking at a bigger picture. Both are inherently good characters. The BOOM is about to happen as their secrets are about to collide! I can feel the betrayal and the anger that is about to go down...I just do not know HOW it is gonna play out! I foresee a lot of bad moods lol!
One thing is for sure...Sig and Tommi are in deep to the game, but more that that they are in deep with each other! No insta-love...NOPE, just pure raw attraction and intimacy that M Leighton does so good. She keeps it down and dirty...and oh so good! I would expect nothing less from SIG!
Ok, I'm not going to lie but this book had me feeling pretty uncomfortable for most of the story. I absolutely loved book 1 and had some issues with book 2 but this one was a real stretch. I get that NA is all about the angst but this had an 'ick' factor that was hard to get over. Thus said I did subscribe to the author's website so that I could get the ending for free. The author knows how to tell a very gripping story but it isn't for the faint-hearted. It's a pity that publishing restrictions prevented the author from releasing the full story in one instalment but kudos to the author for making it fairly easy to download the ending for free via her website.

For the squeamish The h is the girlfriend (no softening the ugly truth here) of a druglord and fulfils some of his sexual fantasies and the H is fully aware of and even witnesses some of what goes down. It was pretty 'ick' for me after the true romanticism of 'All the Pretty Lies'.
